One cold winter weekend, Nikolai and members of the Xtreme Athlete crew left the familiar gym environment behind and headed to Mount Tamborine for the True Grit challenge. It was a chance to test fitness in a very different setting and, just as importantly, to take on the experience together.
Fitness that works outside the gym
Obstacle-course events ask for more than one kind of fitness. Strength, aerobic capacity, grip, mobility, coordination and the ability to keep making good decisions while tired all have a role. No single exercise prepares a person for every challenge; broad, consistent training does.
That is one reason events like True Grit can be so rewarding. They turn weeks and months of training into a practical experience. The aim is not simply to complete a workout on paper, but to feel capable when the conditions are unfamiliar and the next task is not perfectly controlled.
A team effort at Mount Tamborine
The cold weather added another layer to the day, but shared challenges have a way of bringing a training group closer. Encouragement, humour and a willingness to help one another can make the difference when energy drops or an obstacle demands a second attempt.
For Nikolai, coaching has always extended beyond counting repetitions. It is about helping people build the physical tools and confidence to participate fully in the things that matter to them, whether that means healthy ageing, a first event, improved everyday capacity or high-performance competition.
What obstacle-course preparation can teach us
- General strength creates options when a task is unpredictable.
- Conditioning matters most when it supports repeated effort, not just one hard burst.
- Grip, carrying and body-control work deserve a place beside traditional lifts.
- Training with a team adds accountability and makes difficult work more enjoyable.
- A clear goal can bring purpose to the weekly program.
More than an event photo
The finish is only one part of the story. The preparation, the people beside you and the confidence earned along the way are what remain. True Grit at Mount Tamborine gave the Xtreme Athlete crew an opportunity to represent the gym, test their work and make a few hard-earned memories in the process.
Well done to everyone who braved the winter conditions and took on the challenge.
